Seven Sorrows of Mary


First Sorrow
The Prophecy of Simeon

Leader:  I compassionate you, sorrowing Mary, for that affliction which your tender heart suffered at the time of the prophecy of the holy old man, Simeon. O dear Mother, by your heart thus afflicted, obtain for me the virtue of humility and the gift of the fear God.

Leader:   Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
People:   Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

 

Second Sorrow
The Flight to Egypt

Leader:  I compassionate you, sorrowing Mary, for those bitter pangs which your most afflicted heart suffered in your flight and sojourn to Egypt. O dear Mother, by your heart immersed with so great sorrows, obtain for me the virtue of liberality especially towards the poor and the gift of piety.

Leader:   Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Third Sorrow
The Three-day Loss

Leader:  I compassionate you, sorrowing Mary, for those grief which your solicitous heart experienced in the loss of your son. O dear Mother, by your heart filled with maternal anxieties, obtain for me the virtue of chastity and gift of knowledge.

Leader:   Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
People:   Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

 

 

 

Fourth Sorrow
Meeting Jesus Carrying His Cross

Leader:  I compassionate you sorrowing Mary, for that sorrow witch oppressed your maternal heart in meeting Jesus carrying his cross. O dear Mother, by your most loving heart so much afflicted, obtain for me the virtue of patience and the gift of fortitude.

Leader:   Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
People:   Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

 


Fifth Sorrow
The Death of Jesus

Leader:  I compassionate you, sorrowing Mary, for that martyrdom witch your generous heart sustained, in being present with your agonizing Jesus. O dear Mother, by your heart undergoing a severe martyrdom, Obtain for me the virtue of temperance and the gift of counsel.

Leader:   Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
People:   Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

 

 

Sixth Sorrow
Jesus taken down from the cross

Leader:  I compassionate you, sorrowing Mary, for those pangs which your afflicted heart endure when the lance pierced the side of Jesus and wounded its most amiable heart. O dear Mother, by your heart thus transfixed, obtain for me virtue of fraternal charity and the gift of understanding.

Leader:   Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
People:  Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

 


Seventh Sorrow
Jesus lain in the Sepulcher

Leader:  I compassionate you sorrowing Mary, for that anguish which your loving heart experienced in the burial of Jesus. O dear Mother, by your immaculate heart thus steeped in bitter grief, obtain for me the virtue of diligence and the gift of wisdom.

Leader:   Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
